Once a month, the Bridge City Senior Center brings a few elect citizens to Mildred Harris Elementary. For over seven years, citizens have been coming to the Pre-K and Kindergarten classes to read to the children. Each month the teachers have a theme for the class, be it a holiday or specific author. With theme in mind, seniors pick one book to read to the class.
“The senior citizens have been coming to my class almost as long as I’ve been here,” says Ms. Rainer in her Kindergarten class, “The kids enjoy it and so do I, it creates a bond with the citizens that we like to see in our school.”
Mildred Harris’ Principal, Ms. Chiasson, popped her head in during a reading, “A tradition that helps students grow in Mildred Harris is something we encourage and we know it encourages our seniors as well.”
Chiasson says they’re next reading will be on April 9th next month.
